What was your motivation to create the POISE workout?
My motivation to create the POISE workout was that nothing was helping me get my body back in shape after I had my children. Nothing worked….not running, going to the dance studio or gym. But, like most moms, I was determined to look and feel like myself again. So being a serious athlete all my life, I decided to just move my body in positions that would target the areas I wanted to tone and sculpt – abs, arms, legs and bunns…pretty much the whole body but using core strength to accomplish sculpting each of those areas. I combined my experience from martial arts, dance and pilates and, seriously, in less than two weeks my body started responding. My friends started asking me what I was doing and I showed them. Then their friends started asking them what they were doing and POISE was born.
I then had to break it down into a teaching technique so that people could understand how it worked. I will admit it is not easy but it’s as close to a magic pill as you are going to get! I have clients who have worked out for 20 years and others who have gone to several trainers and are now finally happy and satisfied with their bodies…and addicted to POISE. (You can check out the testimonials on my website: www.poiseprodutions.com )
Is the POISE workout representative to your current workout routine or do you like to mix it up?
POISE is a body technique that I apply to various workouts and movements. The workouts are always different and fun in my classes and personal training sessions. The POISE technique is a combination of marital arts, dance and pilates. It takes a mental commitment as well as physical. Depending on my client’s level of exercise, goals, AND immediate mindset determines the type of workout for that day. I also have a POISE Dance class that utilizes the POISE technique. It is a fun and exhilarating way to workout and definitely popular with the ladies. They feel sexy and also learn some new moves for the dance floor.
Do you have any new dvd projects on the horizon?
Yes, I am very excited about this DVD project! I am in pre-production right now for my 3 rd DVD in the POISEfit series and will be unveiled sometime this year.
You created POISE after your twins were born, what advice can you offer new moms trying to get back to their pre-pregnancy bodies?
The best advice I can pass on to new moms is this: Always keep a little bit of yourself that you do not share with anyone. It can be just a sliver, but keep it. Be selfish in a good way. Taking time to do things you enjoy will make you mentally happy. And when you get those happy juices flowing a natural progression is to get physical.
Moms, and women in general, are nurturers. That means that we try and take care, fix, and please everyone around us at the expense of ourselves. Our bodies and minds get out of balance if we are constantly giving energy out and not replenishing, or taking energy in. If we keep a little bit of ourselves then we are able to restore our energy output by doing the things that we enjoy like spending time with our friends, getting our nails done, taking a walk, working out etc.
It’s important to take a half hour, hour, 3 hours or weekend to replenish your soul. You will truly enjoy yourself and your family to a higher degree and they will enjoy you.
Bottom line: a healthy mental attitude will ignite a natural desire to get physically fit.
What recommendations can you offer for getting past exercise roadblocks, finding time to fit exercise into our busy lives, lack motivation?
How can moms with one child be as busy as a mom with 5 children? It’s all relative. We somehow make the time for what is important in our life. You must make a commitment to yourself to take 15-20 minutes a day and workout…even if you don’t feel like it! Find the time. It is there. Make it part of your routine like brushing your teeth. Your mind is a powerful tool, use it. Do not allow yourself any excuses. Remember: No matter your religion or beliefs, your body is your greatest temple (after all you did carry your baby there). If you take care of your body, you will be able to take better care of the ones you love. Enjoy and have fun!
