Give Me 10: Core Cuts
Amy Dixon, 2012

This dvd contains six 10-12 minute core focused workouts. Amy leads with 3 backgrounders, one providing beginner modifications. The set is an open studio and you will need a stability ball and dumbbells for some of the segments.

Hard Core Definitions: This is a traditional floor core routine. Exercises include: crunch variations, bike, leg drops, Turkish getups, plank variations, and a low back series.

Yoga 6 Pack: This is a standing & floor core focused yoga routine.  Exercises include: tree pose & side bend, triangle side bends, warrior 3 & knee pull, some great balance work, down dog knee pulls, side plank leg raises, and a table top series.

Tight n’ Toned Tummy: This is a weighted core focused routine that will also hit other muscle groups. Exercises include: curtsy & chop, side lunge & overhead reach, side bend leg raises, plank rows & press or snatch, Russian twists, and V sit dumbell pass through.

Core Ball Breakthrough: This standing & floor ball routine fully utilizes the ball. Exercises include: standing twists, deadlift series, hi plank series, dip & side bends, squat & twists, plank & pike w/ knee pulls, and lo back work.

Core Ball Blast: This floor ball routine uses the ball in many fun & effective ways. Exercises include: crunch series, ball roll outs & pull ins, oblique work, bridge series, & kneeling lean backs.

This dvd offers a lot of great core work and also hits other muscles as well. The pace in these workouts is quick so you really dont waste any time. Amy is a great lead with great cuing. I rate these routines intermediate to high intermediate but a mod always shows options! I received this dvd to review.

Review: Fat Burning Hip Hop Mix
Billy Blanks Jr., 2012

Billy leads this fun customizable 47 min workout with 6 background exercisers in a nice lighted studio. There are three 10 min sections and a 6 min section that combines the routines for an all out dance party. It also includes a separate w/u & c/d. You won’t need any equipment for this workout.

The 1st 10 min segment (Basics) is straight forward hip hop that is easy to follow and fun! The next segment (Hip Hop Bollywood) is a unique combination of Bollywood style moves with classic hip hop dance. The final segment (Hip Hop Samba) combines hip hop dance with samba moves. The final 6 min segment includes the completed routines from the other segments for a complete dance routine.

I rate this a low intermediate workout in terms of both choreo and intensity. Billy includes a unique mix of hip hop with other genres to create a fun workout that moves along nicely. He is very encouraging & his cuing is great. Great “feel good” workout that is easy to modify up or down. I received this dvd to review.

Health and fitness brought to you by Gwen Lawrence and GaiamTV .com

I’m so excited to introduce myself and help you reach your fitness goals!  My name is Gwen Lawrence, and I’m a celebrity yoga coach. I’ve been in the industry for the almost 20 years, and I work with professional athletes in the New York area, including my Super Bowl Champions, the New York Giants!  You can tweet me your questions and comments at @GaiamTV or Facebook me http://www.facebook.com/GaiamTV .

I am a giant fan of GaiamTV .com , the fabulous go-to site for every fitness need and trend.  I’m a daily user of GaiamTV .com myself, being a busy mother of three athletic teenage boys, running my own business, and maintaining a successful marriage of 21 years. I don’t always get the chance to do classes with my favorite teachers in their studios – but with GaiamTV .com , I do every day online! I get to try teachers I normally wouldn’t have access to – and now you can, too.  The best thing is that you can sign up so easily for a ten day FREE trial at http://www.GaiamTV.com .

So let’s talk summer. Spring has sprung, so it’s time to get serious about bathing suit bodies and skin-baring clothes.  The first thing to peek out from your shorts is a great pair of legs.  Nothing is better for busting cellulite, creating sexy tone, and losing the thigh jiggle than lunges, lunges, lunges – and oh yes, more lunges.  Side lunges to front lunges, and mixing in back lunges.  Remember to:

  • Breathe consistently
  • When you land, track your knee in the same direction as your foot
  • Try to maintain a 90-degree angle with the front leg
  • Do 20 reps on each leg in each direction
  • Try a hop to add power when switching sides

If you’re feeling strong and motivated by Beyonce’s post-baby body and her muscular thighs, do another round of 20 in each direction.  The great thing about lunges is you’ll get great benefits even if you do them without weights.  So, NO EXCUSES – lunge away while watching TV, lunge away while chatting on the phone with your friend.  I guarantee you will see results.  If you need extra motivation or more ideas for toned summer legs, try these GaiamTV .com videos:

Stay tuned for more weekly summer fitness tips and trends!

Review: Boston Body Barre
Zayna Gold, 2012

Zayna leads this 56 minute fully chaptered workout in a nice ballet studio w/ 4 backgrounders. Optional equipment includes a playground ball, a barre or chair, and a band.

Matt: (20 min) Exercises include c curve, bridge variations, & crab tricep dips. Zayna makes good use of the ball to add variety & intensity. Also included is a 6  min stretch.

Barre: (24 min) Exercises include pelvic tuck, pliet varieties, chair pose w/ ball thigh squeezes, a standing donkey kick series, hip shifts & hip circles. I like the unique feel to this workout and the pace is right on.

There is also a 4 min cardio and a 4 min upper body segment included. Exercises include: step touch, toe tap, knee pulls, cross knee pulls with a hop, upper back band pulls and shoulder pinches.

I rate this workout a low intermediate. Zayna is very mellow & down to earth and the variety of music is nice (hip hop to mellow yoga type music). Great for barre fans and some new & unique variations added in to make this a nice addition to your workout library. I received this dvd to review.

ToeSox Toeless Pilates/ Yoga Socks

Lindsey had the pleasure of reviewing the ToeSox Toeless Pilates & Yoga Socks in green. The last pair of yoga socks I had didnt last very long and didnt grip very well, so I am very excited about these! They are super comfy and fit so well! I love the green color and the little rubber bumps on the bottom really grip well during my pilates & yoga workouts. My feet always get cold barefoot so doing my yoga & pilates barefoot does not work for me. And you all know that regular socks do not work- they have you slipping & sliding all over the place. I am SO happy with my ToeSox, super comfortable, top notch breathable cotton fabric that fits to perfection, available in a variety of sizes & colors, contoured heel, and toeless  allows for better range of motion for my yoga poses.

ToeSox Women’s Yoga / Pilates Quarter Socks

Maria had the pleasure of reviewing the ToeSox Women’s Yoga & Pilates Quarter Socks in pink. I chose the 5-toe version to better support my foot alignment while doing yoga and pilates workouts. And the pink- super cute, right! And the seamless design is very comfortable. Nothing is more distracting to my workouts than a big seam on my pinky toe!  I really love that seamless five-toe construction these socks separate my toes and promote optimal alignment while  improving my posture and stance! These are also available in a nice assortment of cute colors and they come in a variety of sizes- something for everyone! The non-slip treads really keep me grounded and the quarter length is perfect for pants, shorts, or capris. I am very happy with the treads and the comfort. Today’s Review: Transform Your Body with Brooke Burke: Tone & Tighten
Brooke Burke, 2011 ***** (5 of 5 stars)

Brooke leads this 61 min strength workout in an awesome warehouse type set. Brooke works out with 2 backgrounders, one of which provides intensity modifications. You will need dumbbells for this workout. The dvd is chaptered & customizable.

The first portion is chaptered as lower body but it is total body (27 min) utilizing dumbbells for the upper body & body weight only for the lower. Exercises includes: weighted punches, rows, dip & kicks, swimmer squats, squat & cross knee pull, pliet & W raise, and pliet variations.

The upper body portion (8 min) uses dumbbells and exercises include: outer bi curls, chest push outs, raise & chest scoop, rotator cuff, overhead tris, and one arm kickbacks.

The core section (16 min) is pretty tough & includes: plank variations, knee pushups with a leg raise, dead buy, sky push, double crunch, and finishes with an isolation hold.

I rate this workout intermediate done following Brooke. Add weights to the lower body work to up the intensity if desired. Brooke does a great job of keeping the legs moving during upper body work and really keeps a nice pace throughout allowing for heavier poundage. I really like Brooke as a lead, great form pointers and cuing. I really look forward to more from her. Very solid and well rounded workout. I received this dvd to review.

The Belles are very excited to have had the opportunity to interview Laura Tarbell of Tarbell Pilates! Laura Tarbell is an internationally known Pilates Instructor, trained and certified by STOTT PILATES, and she is a Nutrition and Wellness Consultant certified through the American Fitness Professionals Association (AFPA). She is a wife and a mother of two year old twin boys. She is a fitness model, most recently seen in Oxygen Magazine’s 2012 Fat Loss Special.

Belles: Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got involved in the fitness industry?
Laura: I’ve been an athlete all my life. However, I suffered from chronic back pain after jamming two lumbar vertebra when I during high school. When I graduated from college, I wanted to stay active so I took up running and weight lifting. However, my back was still an issue. Shooting pain from my lower back down my right leg kept me from reaching my goals. When I discovered the power of Pilates, I wanted to know everything about it. I became a certified instructor so I could share it with my family and community. It started out small, but in a few months my classes were packed. After I had my first set of twins! I decided I didn’t want to work full time. I opened my Pilates studio and have been in love with my new career ever since. It doesn’t feel like work because Ive truly found my passion in helping people reach their fitness goals.

Belles: There is quite a bit of emphasis these days on the importance of strengthening the core – or powerhouse. Would you like to add your thoughts?
Laura: I believe Jospeh Pilates put it best when he said, “You are only as young as your spine.” The core is the support that gives the spine strength and mobility. Strengthening the core is not only essential to athletic health, and a great six-pack!, but essential to movement in our everyday lives. From lifting grocery bags to sitting at a desk at work, the core is involved in everything you do. If it weak, the rest of the body will be effected.

Belles: Your core is rock solid! While core specific training is partly responsible, we all know that a proper nutrition plan is 80% of weight loss success and maintenance. Do you have a healthy eating plan or strategy
Laura: I do watch my nutrition carefully. I eat clean 90% of the day and leave a little room for error. Its the only way to stay sane! :) I choose whole, natural foods as much as possible, including fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, low fat dairy, and whole grains. There are so many great recipes out there to keep you satisfied. I dont really have the desire to eat things like french fries or bacon. I also eat to feel happy and energized.  Do I love a big hamburger with sweet potato fries – yes! But it doesn’t leave me energized. So I don’t indulge very often. And if i do, its only a small, portion-controlled amount.

Everything can be eaten in moderation, or you can find a healthy version to satisfy your taste. I have a really great chocolate chip protein cookie recipe that is totally guilt free! I love it! And I feel good about letting my kids eat them too. (i’ll be posting it on my blog this week!)

Belles: You have created some awesome at home pilates fitness dvds, is pilates your go-to workout or do you mix it up with other genres?
Laura: Pilates and running are definitely my go-to workouts. I love the way Pilates makes me feel- toned, lean, taller, and energized.  It has a relaxing effect on the mind as well. I mix in a bit of weights, including pull ups, incline press, bicep curls, to name a few. Basically, all the exercises that I don’t do on the reformer (which isn’t many!)

Belles: Can we expect any future workout dvds from you? If so, what can you share about them.
Laura: I sure hope so! I’m not sure where this adventure will take me, but I’m excited about the journey. My dreams is to build a following like Mari Windsor. But really I just hope to share the greatness of Pilates. It has helped my life in so many way – from keeping me fit both physically and mentally to getting me in back shape after the birth of my twins. Even if you aren’t doing my Pilates, I hope everyone will do some version of Pilates. It is a fantastic way to keep the body active as it matures.

The Belles are BEYOND excited about this FABULOUS giveaway courtesy of Armpocket ! Armpocket was developed by a team of ACTIVE athletes. In search of the perfect carryall for their fitness activities, runs and marathons, and disappointed with what was already available on the market, they came up with the idea of creating an “arm pocket.” Through trial and error, the first Armpocket was developed in 2006.

The Belles are LOVING our new running partner, Armpocket. It seriously makes carrying all your exercise necessities super easy. I usually toss in my chapstick (I’m an addict) along with my iPhone to listen to tunes and make sure I dont miss any calls. I could also toss in my house key or even a small pepper spray if I needed those things (lol). Its roomy enough for necessities (models vary from 10 – 30 cubic inches) so you can choose the model that you need to fit your phone or MP3 player and whatever else you need to toss in there. And not only do Armpockets come in a variety of models, the arm strap is available in small, medium, or large- so you can find a model to fit you just right! And now available in a variety of fun new colors!

Armpockets are light weight and stylish! Seriously you will get a compliment and someone will ask you where you got it! It is perfect for running, at the gym, and at home for when you want to listen to your own tunes while working out. I am not sure how I lived without mine for this long. DH is a little jealous of mine, so I will be ordering one for him soon! Great way to motivate him to get back out & start running while the weathers nice.

Though I will say that my favorite function is that  you can still use your touch screen on your phone or MP3 player THROUGH the cover!

Choosing the right Armpocket for you is super easy. Just visit the Armpocket Product Page to see all the models and the exact specifications for each model including which phone it fits, strap sizes, dimensions, exterior pockets availability, audio port, and MORE in a clearly laid out grid.
