Review: The Ultimate Workout
Michelle Dozois, 2009

This dvd offers two 30 minute workouts (one cardio and one strength) and a 15 min flexibility. Michelle works out with 2 background exercisers (one offering beginner mods) in a nice, bright, open set. Optional equipment includes: dumbbells, a high step, and gliding discs and Michelle offers no equipment modifications throughout. You can play all or select any section from the chaptered menu.

Ultimate Cardio Blast: After a fun warmup exercises include: bob & weave w/ punches, fast feet to pushups, knee pulls, jump ropes, pulsing lunge hops, quick-quick-slow hops, shuffle hops, ski jumps w/ a speed bag, jacks to plyo jacks, and flying jacks.  This is one of my favorite floor cardio routines- not boring or repetitive. Fun, high energy, and sweaty! Easy to modify up or down.

Ultimate Super Sculpting: After a quick active warmup, exercises includes: kettlebell swings, deadlift variations w/ lat row, 1 legged bridge, disc planks w/ knee pulls, bicep curls w/ hover squats, weighted tri dips, a thorough tricep series, disc pliets, disc lunges, step up (onto your high step) with an overhead press, low side lunges into weighted 1/2 moon, a tough pushup segment, low back work utilizing the discs, and ab work.  Love the multi muscle exercises. New fun combos w/out being overly complicated or awkward. Love the gliding disc work- adds in unique challenges.

Ultimate Flexibility: This is a seated, lying, and standing flexibilty stretch that utilizes a towel to enhance your stretches. Great to add on to one of the other workouts!

I would rate this dvd a solid to high intermediate that really accomplishes a lot in each segment. Michelle created this dvd to allow us to fit it all in: cardio, strength, and flexibility! It also allows us to customize our workout time & focus. Michelle is an EXCELLENT lead- great energy, great pace (no wasted time but not rushed), excellent cuing & form pointers!

Maria-Belle’s thoughts:
A few years back I had a severe dry, cracked and peeling skin problem. After trying several skin lotions, I was unable to find one that healed my dry skin. After speaking with a doctor, he recommended trying Eucerin lotion to help with the problem. It worked! I was thrilled to finally find a hand lotion that helped relieve my skin issues. So, when the opportunity presented itself to try Eucerin Daily Skin Balance, I was excited. I am in love with this lightly-fraganced lotion. It absorbs quickly and leaves my skin moist without feeling sticky. I wouldn’t even know I put lotion on if it weren’t for the fact that my skin was super-soft and nicely scented. I give it two biceps up.

Lindsey-Belle’s thoughts:
I live in the desert & both DH & I have super dry skin, so needless to say we are ALWAYS looking for a good lotion. So I was super HAPPY to have to opportunity to try Eucerin Daily Skin Balance! First thing I did when I received the bottle was smell it- a lovely lightly scented fresh fragrance appropriate for both men & women. The formula is super nourishing and completely non-greasy (a lotion pet peeve of mine). I am a Eucerin convert! I am also super impressed by the price and convenience of being able to purchase it at the drug store, super market, or Target. I give it two biceps up!

The Belle’s give Eucerin Daily Skin Balance Lotion: 4 (of 4) biceps up!

I (Lindsey-Belle) had the pleasure to try this fabulous Crossover Yoga Top

First- super cute, right!!!! LOVE this style! Super flattering and super comfy with TONS of support in all the right places. And the fabric is top notch, the right amount of stretch, and thickness. I am very impressed with the quality, style, and cut of my Crossover Yoga Top. I got it in royal blue, but it also comes in black, and red. And sizes vary from small to extra large in this particular top.

I (Maria-Belle) was fortunate to receive the South Beach Top – Yoga and Workout Cami Top .

This gorgeous top, featured in Berry but comes in a variety of colors, is made with a built-in fully lined, supportive, wrap-around shelf bra making it great for yoga or other fitness activities. And just as the description states, the top is comfortable and offers a flattering fit. The moisture-wicking stretch fabric also passed the test during a grueling sweat-fest workout.

I found the Fit Couture website to be super user friendly and easy to navigate. Lots of great product shots with photos of various angles. The size & color options are clearly laid out and each item offers detailed product descriptions. Adding items to your shopping cart or wishlist is also a snap!

Find out more about Fit Couture on their website , on facebook , and on twitter .

Recently, Michele Olson, PhD , The Exercise Doctor, was kind enough to agree to doing an “interview” for Two Belles. Dr. Olson is a professor of physical education and exercise science in the School of Education at Auburn University. She has a clinical background in exercise physiology. With more than seventy-five publications, she is renowned for her research concerning women and physical activity. We are excited to share her answers to some of our questions.

Can you tell us a little about yourself? When did you decide to pursue a career and doctorate in the field of health and fitness? What was your motivation?

Great question! I did not know what I wanted to do for the longest time! I was a collegiate tennis player and working on a business degree but, I just wasn’t inspired by business. In my heart, I loved physical education and my tennis coach, who was an excellent P.E. teacher. I started working out with the football team – it wasn’t that cool to work out as a tennis player when I was in college :) I soon started beating and outlasting other players who I had not beaten in the past. I wanted to learn more about sports conditioning – and…the rest as they say is “history.” I stayed in school and got a doctorate and learned how to be a researcher – to get at the “truth” about exercise and conditioning.

Many times when exercisers begin a fitness program they take on too much, too soon and risk injury or over-training. What exactly is over-training? What are some of the signs or symptoms of over-training?

Over-training and getting over-use injuries…taking on too much, or, progressing too quickly can result, unfortunately, with both. Signs include difficulty sleeping, feeling like your heart rate is thumping away even at rest, twitching of the legs and trouble overcoming soreness – of course, feeling a bit drained as well. Rest days are as important as exercise days. Recovery/rest is one of the three major principles of exercise! All of us need a workout plan to stay on track and that plan should always include off/rest days – just like athletes.

Recently there has been a lot of buzz around “functional fitness”. What is the benefit of functional strength training compared to traditional strength training ?

You train your body doing movements that somewhat mimic your daily life activities – squatting down and lifting, etc. the idea is that functional training like squatting while doing a biceps curl is that you get so many major muscles working – for one – and, in real life, you do squat down and lift up your gym bag, your child, briefcase, etc. The other great thing about functional moves is that they use so many body parts and, thus, burn more calories than isolated lifting – such as standing doing lateral raises for your shoulders. When you do that, you do isolate your shoulders to define them but, you burn fewer calories and do a movement pattern that rarely occurs in daily life – or sports.

Kettlebells are predicted to become a popular fitness trend in 2011. What fitness trends have you seen come and go and which ones are here to stay?

Here’s my take on that – some fitness trends have a short first life…if they are actually a trend and not a gimmick, they come back. Boot camp classes, kickboxing and Pilates all emerged in the early 90’s to tepid audiences…but, they came back with a roar and stuck around 2006 or so. Why? They all get your heart rate up, are fun and fill-in gaps in our workout routines…especially Pilates. More and more people see the benefit even if they aren’t sweating buckets. The core is more important than ever and Pilates (yoga), b/c they condition the core, give us more strength and stability doing our boot camp and kick box classes! We do better when we work up a sweat if we get a great core for Pilates. Many realize this now.

Recently, The Firm released its latest system, Firm Express , can you touch upon your involvement in the project?

As when I was a Reebok Master Trainer and on many program development teams, my role with the Firm Express was to ensure that the workout moves and that the newer, shorter intervals exceeded the ACSM guidelines for appropriate 20 minute workouts. I tested the energy cost — and the Firm Express workouts do, indeed, burn twice the calories of moderate intensity steady state exercise. As such, we have seen good success in test clients who have done the program and dietary protocol.

Your most recent workout, Perfect Legs, Glutes and Abs , was very well-received. Do you have any plans at this time to make more workouts?

Thank you for asking. Consumers have queried me about doing a companion upper body workout. I do intend to do more…where are all of the extra hours?? :) I think an upper body DVD with a couple of workouts such as a mat one, perhaps a Pilates-inspired one, etc. is something on my list. I know that I have been much more dedicated to my upper body, upper back, spine and abs the more I learn. We want to be fit from head-to-toe. I mean…if we can do 20 lunges on each leg, we should have a balanced body that can do 20 quality push-ups, right? Yes… right!

Special thanks again to Dr. Michele Olson, PhD for taking the time to speak with us. For more information about Dr. Olson, visit The Exercise Doctor at her website or find her on Facebook .

The Other Belle

So who am I? I am a thirty-something happily married mother of a beautiful little girl. In addition to being a wife and mom, I am an accountant by day, blogger by night and fitness enthusiast for life. I initially began blogging to discuss my passion for fitness and striking a balance to fit it all in. Huff and Buff was coined with the belief that cardio (Huff) and strength (Buff) are essential elements in helping you achieve your fitness goals and to provide you with information to get you past your fitness frustrations (Huff) through knowledge (Buff); frustrations that range from deciding on an exercise program, breaking through a plateau or preventing boredom. Huff and Buff quickly morphed into a place to chronicle my adventures into the realm of the exercise video world; a place to share reviews of a workout, workout program or instructor.

On my blogging adventure, I was fortunate to meet some really great people, including fellow blogger Lindsey, from Fitness for the Rest of Us . Together we have decided to form Two Belles, Four Biceps and the Pursuit of Fitness. No, neither of us is from the South, but we both firmly believe in the importance of strength training – dumbbell(e)s – to achieve and maintain our fitness goals. We hope to share our adventures along the way as we continue to pursue the road to a lifelong commitment to health and fitness. Not only do we plan to continue to bring you great reviews and giveaways from some of our favorite fitness trainers and products, but stay tuned for interviews, guest posts, enticing recipes and much, much more.

Hi I’m Lindsey Lu from Fitness For the Rest of Us and now I am one of the belle’s here (think dumbbells!). I started my blogging journey about a year ago with the mission of helping blogland become a healthier place.  Ive had a lot of fun blogging on Fitness For the Rest of Us and am super excited about joining forces with Maria from Huff & Buff . We really hope we can provide a lot of motivation information, healthy living tips, lite recipes, and of course AWESOME fitness reviews & giveaways. We would love to hear from you! A motivational snippet from my brain to yours ;)
Have you ever noticed that fine print on weight loss commercials, magazine ads, and infomercials that says *Results Not Typical ??? Have you ever sat down and thought about that (or better yet, ran on your treadmill and thought about it LOL)?

I have thought about it (after all that’s me ^ they’re saying is not typical). So this statement says that using ( Weight Watchers , Jenny Craig , The Firm , Beach Body , etc.) will typically NOT get you the results of the person that’s hawking the system to you? Why is that? Does the product NOT work, Is it a gimmick?

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that results ARE typical IF you put in the time and follow the rules . I’m saying that for most exercise/healthy eating systems-you can and will lose weight using them ( using is the key word here) you can lose 10 lbs, you can lose 100 lbs. Will simply purchasing the system make you lose weight-NO. Will looking at it, researching it online, reading all the pamphlets that come in the box shed those pounds-NO!

WHAT WILL help you lose weight–using the system consistently and in conjunction with healthy eating habits/ consistent exercise. Wow-that seems so simple? No magic pills, no expensive surgeries, no hormone shots (YES they are really doing that now), no cabbage soup diets. Just plain and simple hard work!

I have maintained a 90 lb weight loss for about six years now by simply living healthy. No fad diets or crazy exercise programs. I eat healthy real foods in moderation and exercise 6 days a week. If I can do it, YOU CAN TOO! Here is a link to my about me page for a bit more info.

What Works For Me:

  • Find healthy foods you love and work with those
  • Find an exercise you enjoy-if you don’t like it-you wont do it
  • Exercise for 45-60 minutes 5-6 days a week and make sure your working hard! A leisurely stroll around the block for 20 minutes 3 times a week isn’t going to get you results. And DON’T ignore strength training-we need it!
  • Cut out “white” foods (mayo, full fat dairy, white pasta, white rice, white bread) most white foods are refined – the nutrients have been removed.
  • Aim for your body weight X 10 for your caloric needs (ie 150 lb person should consume 1,500 calories a day). BUT do not exceed 2,000 calories a day and do not go under 1,200
  • Read food labels!
  • Cut out fast food. Prepare your meals based around fresh fruits and vegis and lean proteins.
  • Eat enough food. Don’t use this as an excuse to overeat but know that undereating will come back and bite you. Your body will store more fat and not function properly without proper nutrition. You will end up binging when you deny yourself too much.

The Hollywood Trainer: Kickboxing Bootcamp Review
Jeanette Jenkins, 2003

Jeanette leads this kickboxing + strength w/o in a really nice outdoor courtyard! She works out with 2 b/g exercisers. The dvd is chaptered very well so you can select the combo you want to do or play all for a nice 50 min workout. You will need dumbbells for this workout.

I like that she combines straight forward kickboxing moves into simple routines but doesnt rep you to death. Jeanette does a great job keeping things moving along w/out rushing us- very good balance. This w/o includes kickboxing, sculpting, balance & core work. She finishes the w/o with a few quick ab moves & a stretch.

Kickboxing exercises include: knee ups, balancing rear kick, double jab to the corners, knee pull- heel tap (really hits the abs & obliques), various punhces & punch combos (jab, cross, upper, hook), various kicks & kick combos (slap kick, roundhouse, front kick, etc.), punch kick combos.

Strength exercises include: pliet w/ clean & press, pushups, statick lunge w/ bi curl, dip-knee up-bi curl, pliet upright row/ shoulder raise, glute lift-delt raise, rotator cuff -glute lift, crunches & double crunches.

I am a huge fan of Jeanette and this w/o didnt disappoint! I would rate this a solid intermediate w/o that would be easy to to modify up or down. I wore my weighted gloves & added some plyos for a nice calorie burn. Oh they do wear and refer to HR monitors & calorie burn often in this w/o. She has a great energy & you can tell she is enjoying herself. (I didnt receive this dvd to review but I won it in a FB contest WOOTWOOT!)

Ellen Barrett Fusion Flow Review
Ellen Barrett, 2009

This is a 45 minute “seamless yoga, calisthenics, and meditative breathing” workout led by Ellen in a nice open ballet studio type set. Ellen works out with two background exercisers, one showing beginner modifications. You wont need any equipment for this workout. The dvd flows from section to section & not broken into segments but is well chaptered into:

Half Moon Stretch: Exercises include- pliet series with plenty of variations and arm circles, static pliets, and 1/2 moons. Some of the work in this section will raise your heart rate.

Rib Cage Reach Series: Exercises include – rib cage zig zags, side shifts w/ airplane arms, pliet- lunge (a burst), and turnings squat w/ arm cirlces. This section focuses on strengthening while stretching.

Dancer Lunge Series: Exercises include – lunge/ kick, pendulum leg & arm swings (balance), punches, backstroke, cobra plank/ pushups, shifting childs pose, etc. Include a good mix of standing & seated strengthening stretches.

Seated Side: Moves include – seated pretzel, side plank modifications w/ stretching, mermaid diamond pushups, mermaid one arm pushups, and windmill. Great oblique work!

Finishing Mat Work: Exercises include V knee drops, V leg extensions, and thigh butterfly flutters. This section hits the core & acts as the cooldown stretch.

I rate this a solid beginner workout that is really suitable for all fitness levels. This is a great workout for days when you want a light or no equipment toning workout that includes plenty of strengthening stretches. Its perfect for those days when you are still sore from your last toning w/o but its a yet again a strength day. Ellen is a fantastic lead and provides excellent cuing & form advice. I received this dvd to review.

In search of Firm Express Reviews ? Search no more!!!! Below are detailed reviews for each and every Firm Express workout! Let me know what you think of the set. I LOVE it! I did a 30 day Firm Express rotation and lost FIVE lbs ! Which is excellent for me as 1) I’ve been at my current weight for a long time- finally busted through a plateau and 2) it was during Christmas and New Years! So obviously my diet was not the best!

Firm Express: Cycle 1: Ignite
Emily Welsh, 2010

The Ignite cycle w/o’s are led by Emily. There are three 20 minute dvds; a cardio, cardio + sculpt, and sculpt. The Ignite workouts feature moderate to high impact and allow for heavier weights. There are 2 backgrounders, one shows beginner modifications. The set is really cute-kind of looks like a basketball court floor w/ nice wood & light colors in the background. You will only need dumbells for the Firm Express series. All Firm Express workouts feature 8 second power bursts w/ a 12 second recovery.

Ignite Cardio + Sculpt: This dvd is about 50/50% cardio/sculpt. Interspersed in the AWT are series of four 8 second bursts with 12 seconds recovery. The power move gets progressively harder each time. Some of the power burst moves include low jack progressing to plyo jacks, fast feet, & modified burpees/ regular burpees. The C+S work includes shift squats, power squats, pliet-squat-kick backs, lunge w/ a row & curl, squat into a burpee & pushup, plank rows w/ pushups, and finishes with some standing oblique work.

Ignite Sculpt: The progressive 8 second bursts get your heart rate up and the strength work in this keeps it up there. The 8 second bursts include fast side lunges, Mt. Climber variations, & a “quick quick run” move. The strength work includes lots of nice combo moves: dips w/ bicep curls, side lunges w/ French press, lat row in a static squat, pliet heel slide, squat w/ a curl & OH press, hinge & row, reverse bridge w/ an oblique twist, push up w/ a reach, pec fly w/ skull crushers & leg extensions, V sits, and concludes with lower back work. They combined moves perfectly so the poundage was appropriate for all moves.

Ignite Cardio: This is an all cardio w/o that includes non-progressive 8 second bursts (most high intensity). Eight second bursts include: fast low jacks progressing to jacks, plyo hops, & plyo knee pull lunges. Other cardio work combines a mix of low & high impact/intensity work including: double step touch w/ a punch, jab- cross- knee- kick combo, lunges & squats into plyo versions, wide high knees, and low & high jacks.

I liked that part of the 12 second recovery is used for set up- no wasted time- quick recovery and back to work! These workouts move right along and you will work up a nice sweat in the 20 minutes. Time flys even combining 2. I rate these solid intermediates that (like all Firms) are really easy to modify up or down. These contain fun new moves so they are different from other Firms, but still athletic and combine strength & cardio work as Firms always have. The intro is quick and says “I am Gaiam” and moves right into the menu- so combining w/o’s is pretty painless! I received these dvds to review.

Firm Express: Cycle 2: Accelerate Rebekah Sturkie, 2010
The Accelerate cycle w/o’s are led by Rebekah. There are three 20 minute dvds; a cardio,  sculpt,  & cardio + sculpt. The Accelerate workouts feature moderate to high impact and allows for heavier weights.

Accelerate Cardio + Sculpt: This workout combines cardio, strength, and 8 second bursts. The bursts include: explosive V-hops, speed squat-shuffles, & plyo pliets w/ arm scoops. Other work consists of low & hi impact cardio and combo strength moves:  soccer kicks, low walks, squat -dip- floor touch, V steps & hops, diagonal lunges w/ rows, squats w/ hammer curls, pushups w/ tri kickbacks, standing to kneeling w/ bicep curl & OH press, leaping lunges, static pliet w/ scoops, hinge & row, upright row w/ abduction, pliet w/ French press, volleyball set & bumps, squat w/ low reach and hops, and concludes w/ standing ab work.

Accelerate Sculpt: This is a strength w/o that includes 8 second cardio bursts. The moves in the 8 second bursts are: skaters, a fast plank lunge, weighted power side lunges, and weighted power lunges. The strength work includes 1 legged squats- into lunge w/ row, pliet- curtsy dip combo, static side lunge w/ tricep kickback, deadlifts, bicep curl variations, & concludes w/ static pliets w/ side bends/ side chops.

Accelerate Cardio: This is an all cardio w/o with 8 second power bursts. The bursts include a quick quick run move, power squat /turning power squat, a Mt. Climber type move where you kick your leg out to the other side (kind of a side plank/ Mt Climber combo) fast X jumps, & a high knee w/ punch. Other cardio work includes: hi and lo jacks, X jumps, walk forward w/ a kick, a squat rear kick punch combo, cross country skiing, power lunges, and finishes w/ lunges & core work combos.
While Rebekah is one of my fav instructors- I could have done w/out her continual high pitch “WHOOOW-ing” in these. Also she seemed to only go 6-7 seconds on the power bursts- (theres a timer).  The actual Accelerate w/o’s are solid, unique, and I like them even more than the Ignite w/o’s. I really enjoyed all three w/o’s!!!!!! I love how these (& Ignite) cooldown w/ some quick standing ab work.
Part of the 12 second recovery is used for set up- no wasted time- quick recovery and back to work! These workouts move right along and you will work up a nice sweat in the 20 minutes. Time flys even combining 2. I rate Accelerate  solid-higher intermediates that (like all Firms) are really easy to modify up or down. These contain fun new moves so they are different from other Firms, but still athletic and combine strength & cardio work as Firms always have. The intro is quick and says “I am Gaiam” and moves right into the menu- so combining w/o’s is pretty painless! I received these dvds to review.

Firm Express: Cycle 3 Turbocharge
Alison Davis, 2010

The Turbocharge cycle w/o’s are led by Alison. There are three 20 minute dvds; a cardio,  sculpt,  & cardio + sculpt. The Turbocharge workouts are designed as active re-charging (though I didnt find them easier than the others in the set). They feature moderate impact and allows for moderately heavier weights. There are 2 backgrounders, one shows beginner modifications. The set is really cute-kind of looks like a basketball court floor w/ nice wood & light colors in the background. You will only need dumbbells for the Firm Express series. All Firm Express workouts feature 8 second power bursts w/ a 12 second recovery.

Turbocharge Cardio + Sculpt: This workout combines cardio, strength, and 8 second bursts. The bursts include: tire run, horizontal leaping floor touches, fast lunges, & high knees. Other work includes: step knee hops, skaters, ham curl variations, pliet w/ French press, a cool diagonal lunge w/ row where you put down & pick up your #s, squat abductions, hinge & row w/ a rear kick, 1 legged squats w/ bicep curls, a fun shuffle V hop/ tire run plyo lunge combo, curtsy dip w/ front raise and finishes w/ plank w/ knee pulls & pushups.

Turbocharge Sculpt: This is a strength w/o that includes 8 second cardio bursts. The moves in the bursts are: plyo lunges, plank jacks, floor touch to high knee jump, & kettlebell swing. The rest of the work includes: lunge w/ bicep curl & shoulder raise, hinge & row, plank rows & plank lunges, a static lunge w/ hands on the ground, 1 legged pushups, step squats w/ hi pull, pliet front raise, concentrated curls,  static squat w/ a row & glute pinch & finishes w/ elevator planks (from hands to elbows).

Turbocharge Cardio: This is an all cardio w/o with 8 second power bursts. The bursts include: side lunge floor touches, squat & jump kicks, 1 legged hops back & forth, & a quick step touch. Other cardio work includes: knee pulls, power lunges, weighted side lunges while passing the dumbbell under your knee, skaters, shuffle forward- punch- shuffle back – knee pull, & kettlebell swing w/ a fast walk up & back.

I felt this set was a bit more choreographed than the others Ive done but was still pretty easy to catch onto. I liked that Alison used weights in the cardio w/o. The C+S dvd had a lot of combo moves so it was hard to really heavy up. She used the entire 8 seconds in the C+S & C, but not in the S. Fun choreo routines w/out being complicated. Alisons token phrase is “ahhhhhhh” in these ;)

Firm Express : Cycle 4 Overdrive
Kelsie Daniels, 2010

The Overdrive cycle w/o’s are led by Kelsie. There are three 20 minute dvds; a cardio,  sculpt,  & cardio + sculpt. The Overdrive workouts offer the most challenging cardio (though I didnt find them any tougher than the others in the set). They allow for the heaviest weights of the series (I agree).

Overdrive Cardio + Sculpt: This workout combines cardio, strength, and 8 second bursts. The bursts include: tuck jumps, side leap w/ high knees, quick curtsy dip to side lunge, and lunge hops. The remainder of the w/o works your UB & LB evenly (yay) and includes low and high impact cardio & sculpting work. Moves include: ham curls, jacks, power lunges & squats, burpee -pushup -bicep combo, OH press w/ dip, curtsy dips w/ hinge & row and trcip kickbacks, squat w/ hammer & concentration curls, shuffle rock step kick combo, and finishes w/ V sit & leg extension variations.

Overdrive Sculpt: This is a strength w/o that includes 8 second cardio bursts. The moves in the bursts are: floor tap- kicks, rear tap while pulling your #’s back, the ol’ Firm bicep-tricep side touch move, & OH press w/ knee raise. The other work includes: deadlift bicep curls w/a balance knee lift, bridge, bench press- skull crusher combo, squat w/ OH press, pushup w/ direction, French press, lat rows, hammer curls,  surrenders w/ lat raise, and ends with plank & elevator planks.

Overdrive Cardio: This is an all cardio kickboxing w/o with 8 second power bursts, most of the work is pretty low impact in this one. The bursts include: weighted sidekicks w/ a punch down, weighted front kicks, front & back kicks, and hitch kicks. She does lots of punch/ kick combos including: jab -cross- sidekick-squat, jumps, jacks, shuffle-punch- kick combos, and finishes w/ standing ab & oblique work.  I rate this w/o intermediate.

I really really really liked this cycle. Def my fav of the series. Her routines are fun, athletic, and unique. Great little combos, love the kickboxing. I rate: C+S high intermediate to low advanced, S = allows for heavy weights & is appropriate for all skill levels depending on the poundage used, and the C is intermediate & low impact.

Part of the 12 second recovery is used for set up- no wasted time- quick recovery and back to work! These workouts move right along and you will work up a nice sweat in the 20 minutes. Time flys even combining 2.  These (like all Firms) are really easy to modify up or down in impact & intensity. These contain fun new moves so they are different from other Firms, but still athletic and combine strength & cardio work as Firms always have. Firm Express: Kickstart Your Metabolism
Jen Ray, 2010

This is the (awesome) “bonus” dvd in the Firm Express kit. It contains a 10 minute ab workout and a 10 minute AWT w/o. Both are led by Jen w/ 2 backgrounders. The set is really cute-kind of  a basketball court floor w/ nice wood & light colors in the background. You will only need dumbbells for the Firm Express series.

Pump It Up!: This is an awesome 10 minute AWT workout. In this w/o you do one set of 8 second bursts (w/ 12 seconds of recovery) then a strength and/or cardio move and repeat. So literally 1/2 of this workout is bursts- loved it! The bursts were all weighted and include: plyo jumps & then she adds in OH press, weighted lunges & adds in bicep curls, and plank moguls. The rest of the workout includes: ski w/ weights & alternating reach, side lunge w/ tricep kickback & dumbbell floor touch, squat- clean & press- abduction, dips & bicep curls, and pushups & renegade rows.

Shortcut to Flat Abs: This is a fun 10 minute weighted core routine. You will need 1 dumbbell for all the work  in this. Standing moves include: standing weighted crunches, squat w/ a chop & swing, and windmill. Floor work includes: clam shell crunch w/ a pullover, side knee drops w/ pec fly, roll ups, bridge w/ sky marches, V sit while rowing, supermans, scorpion low back work, and plank into side plank w/ hip raises.
I absolutely LOVED Pump It Up!- if all the dvds in this set were structured like this- I would be in heaven (well probably because they’d have killed me).  I would rate Pump It Up! a low advanced-if it were 20 min I would say advanced. Shortcut to Flat Abs is a great solid intermediate ab w/o. Jen is a great lead- good curing, nice demeanor. She didnt always use all 8 seconds in the bursts though.

These workouts move right along. No wasted time and you will work up a nice sweat in the 10 minute AWT w/o. These (like all Firms) are really easy to modify up or down in impact & intensity. These contain fun new moves and the time really flys. The intro is quick and says “I am Gaiam” and moves right into the menu- so combining w/o’s is pretty painless! I received these dvds to review.

I had the WONDERFUL opportunity to “interview” Bernadette Giorgi - who i s a certified Pilates Instructor, teacher trainer, and the star of a Pilates video series that includes her best selling “Attitude Ballet Pilates Fusion.” AND she has maintained an EIGHTY lb weight loss- can’t get more inspiring than that! Her answers are in purple below.

Bernadette is the creator of the just b method , Pilates & Movement Arts. Moving away from intense drill centered workouts; Giorgi’s “ just b method ” uses the ease of movement found in Pilates to motivate her clients toward healthier lifestyle choices. Pilates invigorates the body by drawing from a range of “mind/body” disciplines that offer a workout to heighten body awareness.

Q: You’ve maintained a substantial weight loss- how do you keep the motivation every day to continue on your healthy living journey and not go back to “old habits”
A: My approach is “Its a new day” If I get off track by not exercising or eating properly today, I do not continue tomorrow. I tell myself,”Today is a new day, new beginning, new clean white page – I don’t use exercise as punishment or restrictive eating. I do exercise daily & count calories, watch fat & carb intake

Q:. What is your current ‘go to’ workout routine:?
A: I really mix it up. Since we’ve experienced so much snow, I’m not getting outside to do my power walks, so I’ve been on my rebounder for my cardio! Having a blast! Of course I do Pilates with light weights or Reformer everyday

Q: What is good about interval training? I’ve been hearing a lot about it lately, what are the benefits.
A: Interval training is a great way to keep your body & mind “engaged” I love to “mix it up” in all of my classes and in my own personal workout.

Q:. Any tips on staying on track with our diet and exercise programs?
A: I think most people allow themselves to go on a downward spiral. If they “cheated” at lunch they continue at dinner, etc. First, theres no such thing as cheating. If you want a cookie, have 1, not 10. If you know you can’t control yourself or have the impulse to eat the entire bag, buy the single serving “100 calorie” packs. They are more expensive but at least you had your “treat” and its counted out. I am fortunate that I LOVE greens & raw veggies so the eating is under control. I do a lot of “talking to myself” or mindful eating. I notice how great I feel after a kale & grilled tuna salad or an apple with sunflower butter. I LOVE French fries or chips but notice how bloated I feel etc

Q: What is your favorite healthy snack?
A: My favorite snack to get me thru the day is an apple with either low fat baby bella cheese. My favorite “treat” is a dark chocolate square or mini York peppermint patty ONE! ;)

Q: What is the best piece of health or fitness advice you can offer?
A: I think to have fun. When I started on this journey, I didn’t want to “workout” I didn’t feel comfortable at the gym & did like the machines. I remembered how much I love to dance – so I grabbed some weights & gave myself a ballet class. I had fun. Same with eating. Experiment & do what feels good. By taking care of your body, your body will take care you of you. Better Body Better Life …

Q: How do you make time to fit your workouts in?
A: Believe it or not, this is really difficult for me. Teaching anywhere from 7-13 hours a day is not working out – its work! I cardio 20 minutes at a time. Its a different time everyday. What has helped me is plan my day the night before or early in the morning. I actually make a list & schedule my workout in. As women we schedule everything else for everyone else. Put YOU on your schedule – don’t try to “squeeze” you in. This really works …

Thank you so much Bernadette for sharing your insights!
