Today’s Review: Transform Your Body with Brooke Burke: Tone & Tighten
Brooke Burke, 2011 ***** (5 of 5 stars)

Brooke leads this 61 min strength workout in an awesome warehouse type set. Brooke works out with 2 backgrounders, one of which provides intensity modifications. You will need dumbbells for this workout. The dvd is chaptered & customizable.

The first portion is chaptered as lower body but it is total body (27 min) utilizing dumbbells for the upper body & body weight only for the lower. Exercises includes: weighted punches, rows, dip & kicks, swimmer squats, squat & cross knee pull, pliet & W raise, and pliet variations.

The upper body portion (8 min) uses dumbbells and exercises include: outer bi curls, chest push outs, raise & chest scoop, rotator cuff, overhead tris, and one arm kickbacks.

The core section (16 min) is pretty tough & includes: plank variations, knee pushups with a leg raise, dead buy, sky push, double crunch, and finishes with an isolation hold.

I rate this workout intermediate done following Brooke. Add weights to the lower body work to up the intensity if desired. Brooke does a great job of keeping the legs moving during upper body work and really keeps a nice pace throughout allowing for heavier poundage. I really like Brooke as a lead, great form pointers and cuing. I really look forward to more from her. Very solid and well rounded workout. I received this dvd to review.

Building on her roots from the FIRM and decades of experience in the fitness industry, Tracie Long founded Tracie Long Fitness . Tracie Long has created two new unique series to add to her line of workout series: reBoot and Figure30. The reBoot series includes high intensity interval workouts to kickstart your metabolism and bring about changes and desired results. The Figure30 series are short thirty minute workouts designed to focus in on trouble spots.

reBoot2 Real Evolution:
Tracie Long, 2012 ***** (5 of 5 stars)

Tracie leads this fantastic 52 min C+S workout alone in her brick set on a pedestal. You will need a weighted ball and dumbbells for this workout. Tracie does a great job of offering modifications to up the intensity if desired. The dvd is chaptered. There is a dumbbell section, weighted ball segment, and a body weight segment- all provide cardio & strength training.

Tracie alternates hi intensity moves with active recovery and really keeps things moving along. Exercises include: med ball X pushes, jacks, ball weaves between the legs, plyo lunges, figure 8′s with the ball, skater, ball swing & overhead triceps adding in a hop, burpees to pushups & frog hops, floor touch to knee ups, 180 jumps, knee pull hops, plank w/ weighted punches tri kickbacks, side plank dumbbell raise, squat & mil press, tuck jump-march, quick & slow pendulums, dips & bi curls, side lunge-row-hops, and a nice core section before the cooldown. Tracie uses 7 lb dumbbells but I found it easy enough to heavy up.

I rate this a high intermediate workout that really accomplishes a lot! Really worked my muscles & got & kept my heart rate up. Very functional feel that hits the core in fun new ways while staying active. Fun unique exercises combined with Tracie’s stellar cuing & instruction make this an awesome workout! I can not wait for more reBoot workouts!

Figure 30 Butt : Tracie Long, 2012 ***** (5 of 5 stars)

Get ready to sculpt a high and tight butt with Traice’s next chapter in her Figure30 series! Figure 30 Butt is a targeted workout that zeroes in on one of the largest muscle group of the body – the butt. Equipment needed for the workout includes a set of dumbbells, ankle weights and an exercise mat depending on your workout surface.

Figure 30: Butt begins with a focused five-minute warm-up that immediately targets the glutes and prepares them for the work ahead. The workout is then divided into two ten minute sections: Weight and Balance Work and Table and Bridge Work . The first section focuses on standing weighted exercises that target the butt – one side at a time. With the use of a heavy dumbbell, Tracie works unilaterally on the glutes, which not only challenges your balance, but zeroes in on the butt working it twice as hard. The second section is comprised of bridge and table work. With the use of ankle weights, and again working one side at a time to really challenge the muscles, Tracie incorporates the use of ankle weights to really get into the muscle and fatigue it. The workout is rounded out with a cooldown and a stretch.

Figure 30: Butt is a fun, yet challenging, lower body toning workout. The workout is nicely sequenced to thoroughly challenge the muscles of the butt, keep you engaged and never bored. Figure 30: Butt is adaptable to all fitness levels by adjusting your weight selection or omitting them altogether. Tracie Long is an excellent instructor and excels in this workout. She shows superb form, provides flawless cuing and offers motivation throughout the workout.

The series is designed to help you look great and feel confident and focus on yourself. Q&A With Fitness Pro: Laura Tarbell

The Belles are very excited to have had the opportunity to interview Laura Tarbell of Tarbell Pilates! Laura Tarbell is an internationally known Pilates Instructor, trained and certified by STOTT PILATES, and she is a Nutrition and Wellness Consultant certified through the American Fitness Professionals Association (AFPA). She is a wife and a mother of two year old twin boys. She is a fitness model, most recently seen in Oxygen Magazine’s 2012 Fat Loss Special.

Belles: Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got involved in the fitness industry?
Laura: I’ve been an athlete all my life. However, I suffered from chronic back pain after jamming two lumbar vertebra when I during high school. When I graduated from college, I wanted to stay active so I took up running and weight lifting. However, my back was still an issue. Shooting pain from my lower back down my right leg kept me from reaching my goals. When I discovered the power of Pilates, I wanted to know everything about it. I became a certified instructor so I could share it with my family and community. It started out small, but in a few months my classes were packed. After I had my first set of twins! I decided I didn’t want to work full time. I opened my Pilates studio and have been in love with my new career ever since. It doesn’t feel like work because Ive truly found my passion in helping people reach their fitness goals.

Belles: There is quite a bit of emphasis these days on the importance of strengthening the core – or powerhouse. Would you like to add your thoughts?
Laura: I believe Jospeh Pilates put it best when he said, “You are only as young as your spine.” The core is the support that gives the spine strength and mobility. Strengthening the core is not only essential to athletic health, and a great six-pack!, but essential to movement in our everyday lives. From lifting grocery bags to sitting at a desk at work, the core is involved in everything you do. If it weak, the rest of the body will be effected.

Belles: Your core is rock solid! While core specific training is partly responsible, we all know that a proper nutrition plan is 80% of weight loss success and maintenance. Do you have a healthy eating plan or strategy
Laura: I do watch my nutrition carefully. I eat clean 90% of the day and leave a little room for error. Its the only way to stay sane! I choose whole, natural foods as much as possible, including fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, low fat dairy, and whole grains. There are so many great recipes out there to keep you satisfied. I dont really have the desire to eat things like french fries or bacon. I also eat to feel happy and energized. Do I love a big hamburger with sweet potato fries – yes! But it doesn’t leave me energized. So I don’t indulge very often. And if i do, its only a small, portion-controlled amount.

Everything can be eaten in moderation, or you can find a healthy version to satisfy your taste. I have a really great chocolate chip protein cookie recipe that is totally guilt free! I love it! And I feel good about letting my kids eat them too. (i’ll be posting it on my blog this week!)

Belles: You have created some awesome at home pilates fitness dvds, is pilates your go-to workout or do you mix it up with other genres?
Laura: Pilates and running are definitely my go-to workouts. I love the way Pilates makes me feel- toned, lean, taller, and energized. It has a relaxing effect on the mind as well. I mix in a bit of weights, including pull ups, incline press, bicep curls, to name a few. Basically, all the exercises that I don’t do on the reformer (which isn’t many!)

Belles: Can we expect any future workout dvds from you? If so, what can you share about them.
Laura: I sure hope so! I’m not sure where this adventure will take me, but I’m excited about the journey. My dreams is to build a following like Mari Windsor. But really I just hope to share the greatness of Pilates. It has helped my life in so many way – from keeping me fit both physically and mentally to getting me in back shape after the birth of my twins. Even if you aren’t doing my Pilates, I hope everyone will do some version of Pilates. It is a fantastic way to keep the body active as it matures.

Transform Your Body with Brooke Burke: Strengthen and Condition is a sixty-minute workout designed to help you transform your body and reach your goals. Brooke Burke leads this workout alongside celebrity trainer Greg Joujon-Roche. This challenging and dynamic workout is broken up into three targeted workouts to sculpt the lower body, define the arms and chisel your core. The workout is designed to torch calories and burn fat all while sculpting your entire body. For the workout you will only need a set of light dumbbells. From the main menu you have the option of playing the entire workout or selecting one of the individual workouts. The sub-menu also includes an option to customize your workout based on your preferences and time available to work out by choosing the order in which to play the workouts. The workout also includes a music only/music and instruction/instruction only option.

Transform Your Body with Brooke Burke: Strengthen and Condition begins with a basic warm-up that consists of some light stretching. The lower body workout then moves into a series of sixty second exercises that not only tighten and tone the muscles of the legs and glutes but also elevate the heart rate. Squats are coupled with jumps, lunges with kicks so that these double-duty exercises maximize your exercise time. The upper body workout uses a light set of dumbbells and high repetitions to exhaust the muscles of the chest, arms and shoulders. Again the exercises are performed for sixty seconds before moving on to the next one. The core workout consists of a floor abdominal routine to hit every muscle of the core. The workout concludes with a cool-down and stretch. The additional ten minute workout is a short and sweet core routine that consists of abdominal floor work.

Transform Your Body with Brooke Burke: Strengthen and Condition is a targeted and efficient total body, strength and conditioning workout. Brooke Burke does a very good job with offering motivation and support while also offering form pointers and instruction. Trainer Greg Joujon-Roch is there to lead the workout, demonstrate the exercises, offer additional guidance and stress the importance of proper technique and form.

Okay so Im throwing my girlfriends baby shower next month. Its a couples baby shower so we want to have one game for the men to play. Of course we need a prize that men will be interested in for the winner. We are racking our brains for what to get and then I remembered EdenFantasys - they have everything: lingerie, Sex toys , undies, candles, massage oils, women’s apparel & club clothes, gag gifts, and even men’s undies- perfect for our romance basket!!!!

The shower will be sock monkey themed- so we expanded that to include bananas. So most of the food dishes and cake will feature bananas. These would be nice to put in a romantic type gift basket, dont you think? We can call it the “baby making gift basket” since its a baby shower after all. So to the romantic gift basket, we could add a fun candle to it to complete the mood. These Floating Heart Candles are yellow (to match the banana theme). Wouldnt these be super cute to float in the bathtub for a romantic night. Or as a centerpiece. Or in a dish in the bathroom for decoration! Many uses and all adorable. And who doesnt love candles. And lets be honest, you know the wife or girlfriend of the winner- will gladly (probably automatically) snatch up the candle for herself- I know I would! And actually I may just order some of these to use as decorations at the shower! EdenFantasys really does have everything for all occasions LOL. My friend used these candles in navy blue at her wedding and they were super cute & romantic.

Another route we are considering is going for a gag gift. We though it would be funny and we dont mind if the men get embarrassed. DH is a little jealous of mine, so I will be ordering one for him soon! Great way to motivate him to get back out & start running while the weathers nice.

Though I will say that my favorite function is that you can still use your touch screen on your phone or MP3 player THROUGH the cover!
